Conference Topic

Competitive papers, work-in-progress and special interest sessions addressing the Conference theme are encouraged.

The conference theme: Sustainable social enterprise has a number of different dimensions.

In this context, the term ‘sustainable' may mean a socially sustainable action that is capable of being maintained over the longer term (for example social entrepreneurship ventures); environmental sustainability; corporate social responsibility efforts; as well as organisational sustainability (which may or may not be financial). In addition, the concept has been applied extensively to health programs which need to be (self) sustainable beyond the initial investment of externally applied effort. All of these interpretations are welcome to be challenged and debated. The term ‘social' also has multiple interpretations which the conference aims to develop.

One common interpretation focuses on the 'socially desirable' aims which society seeks to achieve through (typically not-for-profit) marketing effort. A second interpretation appears to confuse 'social' marketing' with 'societal' marketing - basically 'socially responsible' commercial marketing, which cares for the physical and social environment. A third less common understanding of 'social marketing' combines 'socially desirable' aims with a strong focus on the relationship , network and community elements – the ‘social' dimensions- of marketing methodology . The contrasting dominant social marketing paradigm presents as top down, mass communication driven programming, which risks pinning the marketer's hope on short term advertising and the like, rather than attempting the long term grind of marketing which works primarily through different levels of 'social' connection.

Papers and special interest sessions may cover any of the following topics:

  • Social entrepreneurship
  • Social marketing
  • Social communications and advertising
  • Nonprofit marketing and fundraising
  • Arts, Sports and Sponsorship
  • Responsible consumption
  • Vulnerable consumers
  • Sustainability and green marketing
  • Public sector marketing and communication
  • Network analysis in social marketing
  • Social marketing in a community development context
  • 'Relationship marketing' within social marketing
